The painting commenced with the boat. Its outline has to be perfect, and the alternative of leaving a white space to fill in is not as accurate This I knew would create problems later where other washes ran against these darks. They would require carefull blending, but I felt it was the best compromise

Firstly a pale blue wash, (using stains which will help to create a shine, I used Winsor Blue, Permanent Magenta and raw Sienna), was run over all the blue areas. Then a darker mix (of the same stains) was applied in successive washes slowly building up the effects of a shine whilst also defining the pale blue stripe. See inset image for more detail

The detail around the foredeck was painted, flowers on the roof, the steerer touched in, and finally the hull was described with a pale under wash of burnt sienna
